What Is Forest Bathing (Shinrin-yoku) and How Does It Work? A Guide for the Chilterns

If you've heard the term "forest bathing" and wondered what it actually means here's what it is, how it works, and what to expect on a walk in the Chilterns.

Forest bathing isn't a hike, and there's no swimming involved. It's the simple, quietly powerful practice of slowing right down and immersing yourself in nature through your senses. Also known by its Japanese name, shinrin-yoku ("forest bathing"), it means being calm and present among the trees, letting the woodland soothe your body and mind. Here's how it works, what happens on one of our walks, and where to experience it in the Chilterns.
What is forest bathing?
Forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) is a slow, mindful practice that invites you to immerse yourself in nature through gentle walking and sensory awareness. It began in Japan in the 1980s as a response to busy, screen-filled modern life, and it's now practised all over the world.
Unlike a walk with a destination, forest bathing has nowhere to get to. You move slowly, sometimes covering only a short distance in a couple of hours, simply noticing the light through the leaves, the sound of birdsong, the scent of the earth, the feel of bark beneath your hand.
How does forest bathing work?
The idea is beautifully simple: when you slow down and give your senses over to nature, your nervous system follows. Your breath deepens, your shoulders drop, and your mind moves out of its busy planning and into the present moment.
Research into shinrin-yoku has linked time spent mindfully among trees with lower stress, calmer heart rate and blood pressure, and an improved sense of wellbeing. Trees also release natural compounds called phytoncides, which some studies suggest may support the immune system. As a trained forest bathing guide, I hold the space gently and offer simple "invitations" small prompts to help you notice and connect, but nature does the real work.

What happens on a forest bathing walk?
We begin by arriving
We start slowly, leaving the rush of the day behind. A few grounding breaths, a gentle settling, and an invitation to switch off your phone and soften your pace.
A series of gentle invitations
Rather than marching anywhere, I'll offer simple invitations to engage your senses, to notice what's moving, what you can hear, what draws your eye. There's no right or wrong; you follow what calls to you.
A quiet sit, and time to simply be
Often we'll find a spot to pause and sit a while, letting the woodland carry on around us. Many people find this the most restful part, nothing to do, nowhere to be.
Coming back together
We close gently, sometimes with a warm drink and a chance to share, sometimes in comfortable quiet, before returning to the world feeling slower and more settled.
The benefits of forest bathing
People come to forest bathing for many reasons, and often leave with more than they expected. Time among the trees can support:
Relaxation — a calmer, quieter nervous system.
Grounding — a sense of being present and steady.
Clarity — space for thoughts to settle and the mind to rest.
Connection — a deeper relationship with the natural world, and with yourself.
You don't need to be fit, sporty or "outdoorsy." Forest bathing is gentle, accessible, and suits almost everyone.
Forest bathing, blended with sauna, sound and ceremony
At The Chiltern Sound Spa, forest bathing is often woven together with other wellness practices, so that time in nature becomes part of something deeper. We pair it with the heat of the sauna, for the beautiful contrast of cool woodland and glowing warmth; with shamanic drumming, where the steady heartbeat of the drum carries you further into the landscape; and with sound and seasonal ceremony, to mark the turning of the year. Each blend offers a different kind of restoration and all begin in the same place, slowing down among the trees.

Forest bathing for teams and corporate away days
Forest bathing isn't only for individuals. We host corporate teams and away days that blend time in nature with space for people to reconnect, with themselves, with one another, and with the way they work.
Drawing on a background in service and systems design, these days pair the calm of the woods with facilitated time to build connection, explore organisational culture, and think differently about the systems a team works within. A restorative, genuinely human alternative to the usual meeting room.
What to bring and wear
Very little, that's part of the beauty. Just come prepared for the weather:
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes or wellies.
A warm layer, even in summer, as we move slowly and don't build up heat.
A blanket or mat to sit on, and a bottle of water.
