What Actually Happens at a Sound Spa (Also Known as a Gong Bath or Sound Bath)? A First-Timer's Guide

If you've never been to a Sound Spa before, here's exactly what to expect, from the moment you arrive to what you'll want to bring.

Coming to your first sound spa can feel a little mysterious, and that's part of the magic. But you don't need any experience, and there's nothing to prepare or "get right." A Sound Spa, also known as a gong bath or sound bath is simply an 60-90 minutes or so of deep rest, where you lie down, get cosy, and let waves of sound from gongs, singing bowls and chimes wash over you. Here's how one of our sessions unfolds, so you can arrive knowing just what to expect.
What is a sound spa?
A Sound Spa (you may also hear it called a sound bath or gong bath) is a deeply relaxing experience where you rest comfortably while soothing instruments create immersive waves of sound. There's nothing you need to do, you simply lie back and listen. The vibrations gently guide your body and mind into stillness, supporting deep relaxation and a calming of the nervous system.
How a session unfolds
We begin by grounding
We start with a gentle grounding meditation to help you arrive and settle. This is often followed by a little seasonally-inspired journaling or a mindfulness activity, to help you drop out of your busy day and reconnect with yourself.
Then we sink into deep rest
Next, you'll get cosy, blankets, cushions, the lot! And we begin the Sound Spa itself. You'll be slowly guided into a place of stillness and rest as the sounds begin, with nothing asked of you but to lie back and receive.
There's no right or wrong way
The room is usually dark, lit softly by candlelight, and held as a calm and peaceful space. If you need the loo, or to shift and move at any point, you're always welcome to, just do so gently.
There's no right or wrong way to experience a Sound Spa. You simply allow the sounds to wash over you. Some sounds you'll sink into and enjoy; others you may find yourself gently working with. That's completely normal, it's the different vibrations meeting you where you are, working with you on a cellular and energetic level.
How your body might feel
As you rest, you might notice sensations in your body, warmth, coolness, a gentle tingling. This is simply energy moving and releasing, and it's nothing to worry about. Every Sound Spa is different: it can be an emotional, physical and spiritual experience, sometimes all at once and no two are ever quite the same.
Who comes to a sound spa?
Many people come on their own, for a pocket of precious me-time. But just as often we welcome groups of friends and family sharing an evening together, and couples experiencing it side by side. The space is open and welcoming to all. Our sessions are mainly for adults, but if you have a young adult over 14 who's happy to enjoy the sounds and lie still, they're most welcome too.
What to bring to your first sound spa
A little preparation makes all the difference to your comfort. Here's what to pack:
For ultimate cosiness: wear loose-fitting clothes, and bring a yoga or camping mat, a blanket, a pillow, cosy socks and an eye mask if you have one.
For the journaling: a favourite notebook and pen to capture any thoughts, feelings or ideas. You're also welcome to bring any crystals that resonate with you. And pack a bottle of water to stay refreshed.
Photographs: feel free to take a photo at the start and if you share it, do tag us @thechilternsoundspa. Then pop your phone onto aeroplane mode to keep the space peaceful and distraction-free.
A little something to take home: I have a small shop with shamanic Florida water and a few treasures, so bring cash or a card if you'd like to buy anything.
